What is yoga?

In simple terms, yoga is a mindfulness practice that connects mind, body and breath. It involves physical movement, breathing and relaxation techniques. There are many different styles of yoga. Miranda Jane Yoga classes are hatha style which means they are mainly physically focussed. So, in a one hour class you can expect to be moving your body for 40-45 minutes with some time at the beginning and end of the class for grounding, breathwork and meditation.

What are the benefits of practicing yoga?

Many people start yoga for the physical benefits which include increased flexibility, strength and tone. It can relieve common aches and pains, release tension and support you in feeling supple and at ease. Your posture, fitness levels and overall health and wellbeing can improve with regular practice.

Yoga also benefits the mind and your mental health. It encourages you to be present in the moment which can provide clarity and relieve feelings of stress and anxiety.

Do I have to be flexible to do yoga?
Absolutely not! That's what you are going to class for. Classes are designed to help improve strength and flexibility.

What shall I wear to class?

Wear something comfortable that allows you to move freely. You can practice bare foot or with socks on. We recommend grip socks to avoid slipping on the mat.

What shall I bring to class?

Bring your own mat if you have one and a bottle of water. Don't worry if you don't own a mat, we will have spares available.

I have a health condition. Can I still join your yoga classes?

Generally speaking, yoga is accepted as a safe and gentle form of exercise and many use yoga to help manage health conditions but it's best to get confirmation from your GP or medical professional that it's safe  to go ahead and if there is anything specific to avoid. General modifications for common ailments can be provided during classes so be sure to complete the student information form in advance of class so your teacher is aware and can best support you. This will be sent to you prior to your first session with us.

When is the best time to start pregnancy yoga?

Pregnancy yoga classes are designed for pregnant people within their second and third trimester. You can start anytime from around 13 weeks and continue throughout your pregnancy until baby arrives. The movement will vary slightly course to course and you will be able to repeat and practice some of the birthing techniques again so they come more naturally to you when needed.
